UNDERDOGS
Six underachieving teenagers are given six unruly, abandoned mutts and just five weeks to train them for the world’s most prestigious dog show – Crufts. This series aims to find out if caring for a dog can change these teenagers’ lives.
Under the expert tuition of no-nonsense dog trainer Lynn Barber, the teens take on a gruelling schedule of early morning poop scooping and intensive dog training sessions. As well as preparing for Crufts, the teenagers have to convert their unruly mutts into well-trained pets for re-homing. For our unmotivated teens who’ve fallen out at school, ended up in trouble and failed to hold down jobs, it’s a tall order that will require, commitment, patience, responsibility, discipline and, above all, hard graft.
As well as Lynn’s tough-love training regime, the dogs have an important role in keeping the teens on track. Each teenager has been matched with a dog that mirrors their own personality and behavioural problems – whether they are aggressive, lazy, temperamental, disobedient or shy. Can the teenagers learn that in training and improving their dogs, they too can control and improve their own behaviour? Will caring for a pooch turn their lives around?
